DESIGN AND RESEARCH
WORLD STUDIO (PSU, USA)
The World is experiencing significant population growth and fast urbanization, particularly in the Global South. This rapid, “uncontrolled” development puts enormous pressure on cities giving rise to numerous political, social, infrastructural, and ecological, problems. The formal sector does always not always accommodate people immigrating to urban centers, forcing them to be entrepreneurial and develop alternative settlements, with varying forms of governmental engagement.
The focus area was a terrain located inside the city of Ahmedabad, India, partially occupied by informal settlements and agricultural land. The philosophical standpoint of the studio is that informal settlements are not a problem, but a solution with problems that can offer alternative urbanization paradigms that are worth exploring. The idea is to use these models as part of a novel methodology for the design of low-income housing that avoids the massified outcome of traditional approaches. The studio is a platform to test ideas, identify problems, and develop solutions.
BELMONT UNIVERSITY
Set in the backdrop of the world 3rd fastest growing economy with a site located in Ahmedabad under the world studio program of Belmont University USA. This site of informal housing that is not ordered conflicts on a daily basis with ordered developments on its 3 sides. While the ordered part of this district makes access to housing, livelihood, healthcare and education by default, the non-ordered (project site) struggles to get access to these 4 basic amenities.
